Surf City and Morehead City

Surf City, NC
Surf City Marina
May 1, 2012

We left our marina just South of Southport at about 6:15 am and when we arrived to the city of Southport, John and Mary on "Passport" were just leaving their marina.  It has really been nice to be in sync with them over the last couple of months but we will be parting company today and may not see them again for a while.  They are going to Beaufort and we are going to Morehead City to stay with long time friends from Columbus.  We went through Wrightsville Beach, saw some nice homes and got to Surf City Marina right after the 1:00 P.M. swing bridge opening.  We had to wait for about 15 minutes for the bridge which means going in circles and trying not to get out of the channel which is a little tough on the transmissions - but it's better than running aground.  Surf City is a nice little beach town and we spent a few hours touring the town. I was hungry so we went to a greasy spoon called "BATTS" which has been there for quite a while.  We had inexpensive hamburgers and fries.  There was a Dairy Queen nearby so I had a mini Blizzard for dessert. We had our last happy hour with "Passport" for a while, ate on the boat and went to bed.

Morehead City Marina
May 2-5, 2012
On Wednesday morning we got up early and headed to Morehead City.  The original plan was to only go about 38 miles to Swansboro, but we decided to run the 58 miles to Morehead City.  The weather has been pretty consistent for the last few days in that it is nice and calm in the morning but the wind picks up quite a bit in the afternoon for docking.  The ride along Bouge Sound was pleasant.  The sound is wide but you still need to stay in the channel because it can get shallow quickly.  I had picked the Morehead City docks to stay for no other reason than our friends live in Morehead City.  I read that the docks were perpendicular to the current and to try to get there on slack tide.  We did get there at slack tide but the wind was horrible which made docking quite a challenge.  The city docks are not manned and are operated by another marina about 1/4 mile away so there was nobody there to help us dock - we made it in with only a few scratches. We called our friends and they came and picked us up so we could spend a few days at their house in the city.
Meg and Tim are from Columbus but have lived in Morehead City for the last 15 years.  Meg and Ginny have been friends since grade school and since Ginny and I have been dating since high school I have known Meg for a long time.  This was just what the doctor ordered.  We spent three nights at their house and we had the most relaxing time that we have had for a long time.  Meg and Tim were wonderful about letting us just sit back and play with their dogs without trying to entertain us.  The second night we were there they invited us to have dinner with good friends of theirs at a local watering hole which was great.  They let us use one of their cars to visit Beaufort and do other errands which was perfect.  Friday night we went to Meg and Tim's church for an opening of a local artist.  It was a great reception where we met a lot of really nice friends and even bought one of the paintings.  Then it was home for spaghetti (Ginny made the sauce in the afternoon).  Tonight was our last night and we just had one of the top three meals that we have had since we started the trip.  A top three meal is not just about the food but more about the company and the conversation. As I write this Ginny is on the phone with friends from Lake Erie who we miss a lot and can't wait to see again when we get back.  We are leaving tomorrow morning for Oriental, NC.  We are excited about going back to Columbus next for a few days and then our daughter, Stephanie and her husband, Casey will be coming back with us to do some cruising on the Chesapeake.
