Bobcaygeon and Bolsover, ON

Bobcaygeon, ON
Centre Point Landing
July 7-8, 2012

Like I said in my last post, we were not allowed to stay at Lakefield on Saturday night because of a concert so we set out for Bobcaygeon.  It was rainy and a little chilly but we really didn't have a choice and besides we figured it would keep the weekend boat traffic down.  As usual we got an early start and "Kismet" was in the lead.  We only got a few miles when "Kismet" hit a rock (Damn Rocks) in the middle of the channel.  Dean is a very very conscientious and cautious pilot and he was not going very fast.  After they figured out that the boat was not sinking and they could limp along, we took the lead and went all the way to Bobcaygeon.  The weather cleared up and by the time we got to Bobcaygeon the traffic was picking up so we were glad to be tied up at Centre Point Landing.  I think most of the Loopers go to Gordon's but we really liked Centre Point and they could not do enough for us. The dockmaster/owner is Tom and Jake is the dock hand.  We took it easy on Saturday and ate on the boat.  Dean had told Tom about his rock and Tom said he would dive on Sunday to survey the damage.

On Sunday morning, Tom put on his SCUBA equipment and went under "Kismet".  Tom said there were two large gouges in the bottom and the starboard prop was damaged.  Beth and Dean decided that they were going to limp to Midland to have the boat pulled and the prop repaired.  We all walked into town and had lunch and ice cream and then walked back to the boat.  We had dinner on the boat and decided to leave  at 6:30 on Monday for Sunset Cove Marina.

Sunset Cove Marina

We left Bobcaygeon on Monday morning early and were headed to Bolsover which is just short of Lake Simco.  Along the way was Fenelon Falls which could have been a nice stop but it was not very far and we wanted to make up some time.  The day was nice but we were constantly tested with narrow and shallow passages.  In one of the spots you are supposed to announce on the radio that you were coming so other vessels could wait if they were coming the other way.  We did announce our intentions but of course a house boat came anyway and it was a little tough to pass.  Before we arrived at Bolsover we had to go through Lock 36, which is the Kirkfield Lock and also the highest point of the TSW.  The Kirkfield Lock goes down as will all of the others until we get to Georgian Bay.  Kirkfield is an hydraulic lift lock just like Peterborough but only 45 feet instead of 60 feet.  The lock was full with four big boats but we were in front so we had a good view going down.  After the lock there is a small lake and then it was really narrow and shallow until we got to our marina but the scenery was pretty and besides Ginny was driving so I closed my eyes and waited for the bump that never happened.  We  docked at Sunset Cove Marina and they could not have been nicer.  Sunset Cove is in the middle of nowhere but there was pizza delivery so we decided that would be a good dinner.  We ate pizza and wings and went to bed.  The pizza didn't agree with Ginny or I and we were up most of the night with indigestion.

  1. Can you tell me how much Kismet draws and did either of you plot the location? Thanks and I enjoy following the blog. Ken Shanley

    1. Ken,
I believe Kismet draws 4 feet. They hit a rock on Katchewanooka Lake between Red C152 and Red C154 which is just past MM 166 which is Kilometer.
